Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that causes people to have recurring, unwanted thoughts, images, or sensations, called obsessions, and to feel driven to perform repetitive behaviors, called compulsions, to get rid of them. These obsessions and compulsions can be distressing and interfere with daily activities and social interactions.
The main treatments for OCD are therapy and medications such as antidepressants.
Ketamine is thought to work by facilitating the growth of new neural pathways, putting the brain in a state of neuroplasticity. Even patients who have not benefited from multiple trials of different oral antidepressants can benefit from Ketamine treatment. Traditional oral antidepressants work on OCD via serotonin neurotransmitters. However, Ketamine works on a completely different neurotransmitter called glutamate. This regulates emotions, memory, neuroplasticity, and other cognitive processes. Glutamate also stimulates growth of new synapses hence the neuroplasticity. This neuroplasticity allows the patient to create new thinking patterns that can alleviate the symptoms of OCD. Both MeRT and TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) have shown promising results in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD):
