How MeRT works
Our clinic combines three medical technologies EEG, EKG, rTMS, and physician insight – in a unique, leading-edge, highly targeted process.
- An electroencephalogram (EEG) records the electrical activity of the brain and captures electrical activity of the brain. Obtaining an EEG recording is painless and non-invasive and takes about 30 minutes. As every EEG is unique and tied to the individual, this tool enables a customized approach to therapy.
- Our clinic also utilizes electrocardiograms (EKGs) that incorporate the electrical activity of the heart with that of the brain. This plays an important role in explaining the health and function of the brain.
- A non-invasive, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) plan is developed using data from the EEG. These treatment sessions stimulate the brain to optimize its neural communication. A number of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation systems have been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for neuromodulation in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder. The neuromodulation equipment used for MeRT brain therapy has been cleared by the FDA in the treatment of depression and may be used off label for other disorders in the practice of medicine.
