How MeRT works
Our MeRT brain treatment center uses a brain therapy protocol that combines three medical technologies EEG, EKG and rTMS – in a unique, leading-edge, highly targeted process.
- An electroencephalogram (EEG) records the electrical activity of the brain and reflects the current metabolic and attention state of the brain, which can change according to consciousness, alertness, and neurological state. Obtaining an EEG recording is painless and non-invasive and takes about 20 minutes. As every EEG is unique and tied to the individual, this tool enables a customized approach to therapy.
- Our MeRT brain treatment center also utilizes electrocardiograms (EKGs) that map the electrical activity of the heart. This plays an important role in explaining the health and function of the brain.
- Non-invasive, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is applied using data from the EEG. This therapy painlessly stimulates the brain over a prescribed treatment period to change and optimize its neural pathways. A number of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation systems have been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for neuromodulation in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder. The neuromodulation equipment used for MeRT brain therapy has been cleared by the FDA in the treatment of depression and may be used off label for other disorders in the practice of medicine.
